Restoration of Steam Locomotive 50 2988
In the years 1985 and 1986 engine number 50 2988 of the DB (Federal German Railway) was restored to working condition at the depot of the Wutachtalbahn in Fuetzen, Germany. 50 2988 a 2-10-0 freight engine was the last of its kind in operation at the Federal German Railway. She was withdrawn from service in 1976. At the time of her restoration I was an active volunteer at the museum railway (Wutachtalbahn), usually helping with the restoration of passenger cars. Once in a while I was helping with the engine as well though. I still vividly remember removing big sheets of rust in the tender with a sledge hammer... I took the pictures below during the time of the restoration and they survived the last 30 years in a album. Unfortunately the quality is not the best, but one can still get a pretty good impression of the enormous effort that is needed to restore a old steam locomotive to running condition. The engine is still in service at the Wutachtalbahn. If you would like to see it in action, I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful museum railway in the foothills of the Black Forest.
